Wireless Adapter Deals Available Now

When it comes to buying a wireless adapter for your home or office network it's important to know whether it will be adequate for the job. There have been many advances in wireless technology over the last few years and now today's adapters are much faster and have a better range than ever before. So when looking for a wireless adapter make sure you check that it's range is good enough for your particular application. If you are buying one for domestic purposes then usually a standard range model will do as the distance from the extremes of one end of your home to the other will be negligible. However, if you have a very large home or need to connect wirelessly to a computer in say, an out-building or the bottom of the garden, then it would be essential to purchase an adapter with a very good range. Of course the range issue is also reliant on the signal power of your wireless router so you may need to upgrade to a more powerful one if you experience signal problems.

If you do experience signal problems then it may be worth while to try the following remedies as often they can save you the trouble and expense of buying a new router or wireless adapter.

  • Try and place your wireless router is in a central location in your home.
  • Make sure the router is not on the floor or next the large metal furniture.
  • Change channel your router operates on in the routers' admin.
  • Reduce possible interference by turning off over wireless equipment such as cordless phones.
  • Check with your router and adapters manufacturer for firmware updates.
  • Whenever possible try to buy the same make of router and adapter as they usually work better.
  • Think about purchasing a wireless repeater to extend the range of your router.
  • If none of the above helps, upgrade older equipment to the 802.11g standard

It's good to remember that homes vary in construction and so some will allow signals to transmit easier than others. For example a modern brick built semi will have much thinner walls than an old farmhouse. So expect weaker signals if you live in the latter. It's also worth noting that steel floor girders can dramatically cut signal strength and you should bare this in mind when positioning your router or wireless adapter. Similarly, any large metal objects such as radiators and filing cabinets can reduce wireless adapter range and therefore you should always try to position equipment away from these.
